Debate competition 6th March, 2025

In observance of International Democracy Day, the Department of Political Science at PCMSD College organized a thought-provoking debate competition centered on the topic: "Is the United Nations Still Effective in Maintaining World Peace?" The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students ac, who engaged in a rigorous exchange of ideas.  Proponents highlighted the UN's significant contributions to global peacekeeping efforts, citing its role in mediating conflicts and deploying peacekeeping missions in volatile regions.  They emphasized the organization's success in facilitating peaceful resolutions and its commitment to upholding international law. Conversely, critics pointed to instances where the UN's interventions were perceived as inadequate or delayed, questioning its responsiveness in crisis situations.  They argued that geopolitical interests and the veto power held by permanent Security Council members often hinder decisive action, impacting the organization's overall effectiveness. Assistant professor aswinder Kaur lauded the participants for their insightful arguments and encouraged continued discourse on international governance mechanisms. Garima and Navjot of B.A.B.ED 6th semester bagged the first and second prize, while Bhawana of B.A 4th semester bagged the third prize. The debate concluded with a consensus on the importance of continuous assessment and reform of international bodies like the United Nations to ensure they adapt effectively to the evolving challenges of global peace and security.
